United seeking home success

Christchurch Brother United’s recent loss to McKee Nelson United should provide it with extra incentive to begin its Rothmans Soccer League home programme on a winning note against the same team at Queen Elizabeth II Park tomorrow. The 4-1 loss United suffered in an Air New Zealand Cup game in Nelson, played a crucial part in it missing out on a place in the final last month. Laurie Blyth, the United coach, has said that the margin between the two teams on that occasion was misleading. United was not, he felt,
three goals worse. There are also differences in the composition of both teams for tomorrow’s match. United will have its two national representatives, Ceri Evans and Allan Boath, available, while Nelson will be weakened by the likely absence through suspension of Kenny Drakeford, its diminutive midfielder. There will, however, be special interest in the showing of two Nelson players, Mark Smith and Phil Dando. Smith joined Nelson from Cashmere-Wanderers this season, leaving behind him an impressive goal-scoring record.
He scored one of Nelson’s goals in its 2-1 win over Dunedin City in its last Air New Zealand Cup match to put it into the final, and will be particularly eager to perform well in his home city. Dando was United’s goalkeeper in its best years, in the mid-19705. He had a fine record with United before continuing his career in Australia. Now he has returned as Nelson’s playercoach. United will be using three attackers, Andy Harrison, Brent Berry and Steve Wooddin as Mr Blyth pursues his policy of playing positive soccer.
