Wrong team blamed

The Canterbury Country senior rugby team was not involved in an incident in Motueka this week, in which damage was done to the lighting and outdoor furniture of a dairy. The president of the Canterbury Rugby Sub-unions’ Association, Mr Stewart Miller, said yesterday that there was an incident, but it did not involve any members of the Country senior team. He said that a report that

the captain of the team, Andy Earl, had passed over a cheque for .$l5O to the owner of the dairy to cover the damage was misleading, as Earl was not even on the tour. Mr Miller said that the incident involved members of the Country Colts team which was in Motueka at the same time, and it was the Colts captain, Chris Earl, who gave the owner the cheque. “The incident is to be

regretted, but it is unfair that the senior players should be blamed for it. Those involved have been disciplined, as well as having to pay for the damage. “Nevertheless, I was surprised to see the incident reported. So far as the team’s management was concerned the matter was settled to the satisfaction of all parties before the team left,” said Mr Miller.
