Good table tennis win for John Armstrong
The evergreen Riccarton player, John Armstrong, proved too consistent with his defensive chop shots for last year’s second-ranked Canterbury player, Michael Hamel (Linwood), in the second round of the A grade inter-club table tennis competition. The pair had three closefought games, Armstrong winning the deciding one, 21-17. Although Armstrong won his three singles, Linwood took the contest, 7-5. The favoured team, Avonside I, dropped only one match for the second time when it easily dealt with the club’s second team. The unbeaten Maurice Burrowes was in impressive attacking form. Riccarton II beat Riccarton 111 in spite of a junior, Mark Lockhart, winning all his singles for the losing combination, and the hardbat chop defender, Bert Thompson, scored three single wins as Avonside 111
