Bank shares rise
NZPA Sydney Prices fell on Australian stock exchanges yesterday throughout the morning, but rose in afternoon trading ahead of the week-end on lower volume, which brokers linked to the filling of big offmarket orders on Thursday and the mopping up of leftover selling orders. Bank shares opened weaker on profit-taking but jumped in afternoon trading after Westpac announced a 41.5 per cent rise in interim profit. Westpac reversed an early 5c fall to close 5c up at 400. ANZ lost 10c early but recovered to end 4c lower at 586 while National ended 3c up at 375. At 3 p.m. the all-ordinaries index was 0.1 points down at 747.7, with the all-industrials up 0.2 points at 1002.1 and the all-resources down 0.4 points at 546.9. BHP was up 10c at 1100 while CSR rose 2c to 360. Metal stocks retreated with CRA down 8c at 578 and EZ Industries down 10c at 536. MIM held at 322 while Bougainville rose 3c to 248. Gold stocks were weaker as the Australian dollar lost f round against the United tates currency. GMK fell 20c to 950 while 10c falls put CNG at 540 and Poseidon at 450. Peko lost 6c to 484 and Emperor fell 5c to 380. Coal stocks were mixed, while uraniums held. Santos fell 4c to 666 ahead of its rights issue. Crusader rose 15c to 295 while Hartogen
added 10c to 275 and Bridge gained 5c to 290. Weeks Australia rose 4c to 162, but its Jabiru well partner, AmpolEx, lost 5c to 425. Pioneer Sugar lost 6c to 122 on further heavy trading with Bundaberg suggested by brokers as a possible buyer. Bundaberg was steady at 260. Coles rose 3c to 378 in an otherwise soft retail sector. CUB rose 5c to 425 and Philip Morris 6c to 586. Amatil rose 8c to 228, Cadbury lost 3c to 187 and Fielders fell 4c to 161. Building material stocks eased with Boral at 360, Hardie 330, and Pioneer Concrete 154, all down 3c. Adelaide Steamship fell 5c to 455.
