Arms race

Sir,—lt is amazing that within hours of the Soviet Union deciding not to join the Olympic Games, topranking United States officials were reported to be on their way to Russia. When the Russians withdrew from the arms talks and went home to their 20,000 missiles, no-one rushed to Moscow. The Games may

now run at a financial loss of ?100M — an hour and a half of arms spending. It will be tragic if the Games are disrupted, it will be a disaster if the arms race is not stopped. While our Prime Minister is overseas he has a tremendous opportunity to press for a summit meeting between the Soviet and United States leaders, a course advocated by Alistair Cooke, or perhaps Mr McLay could do New Zealand a good turn and speak up, supporting the concern voiced by so many people.—Yours, etc., CHRIS KING. Loburn, May 9, 1984.
