Dry firewood
Sir, — The Clean Air Act states: “Any person who sells by retail any fuel, other than an authorised fuel, for delivery by him or on his behalf to any premises in a clean air zone commits an offence.” The Clean Air Zones (Canterbury Region) Order, 1984, now in force, states: “The use as fuel in a clean air zone of wood having a moisture content exceeding 25 per cent (on wet weight) is hereby prohibited.” Well-seasoned or air-dry ■ wood should have a moisture content around 25 per cent. Green wood typically has a moisture content of at least 80 per cent. Generally wood should be stored at least six months after it has been cut. As we understand it, once the wood is dried .to the 25 per cent moisture level, the wood if stacked outside will not absorb any additional water. — Yours, etc., P. V. NEARY, Honorary Secretary, N.Z. Clean Air Society. May 7, 1984.
