Japanese staff
Sir,—Alastair McLauchlan is on dangerous ground when he alleges that people are being misleading to protect their jobs. My wife) who is Japanese, and I have employed a number of polytechnic pupils. We have found, almost without exception, that they only want a parttime job, one or two nights a week, but not Friday or Saturday. Their concept of work is strolling around chatting to and being friendly with, our Japanese customers. I would be happy to organise and chair a meeting between local business people dealing with Japanese tourists, and Polytechnic staff, to define the direction Polytechnic courses should take in the future to best serve all the local community. It may be that we should bring in a Japanese tutor to instruct our students.—Yours, etc., RUSSELL BLACK. May 6, 1984.
