President Reagan in China
Sir,—One wonders what President Reagan’s inscrutable Chinese hosts, belonging to the world’s oldest civilisation, made of the leader of the world’s youngest when he lectured them on the benefits of God and democracy. I detect a slight lack of enthusiasm in their reception. His Administration’s record would be scarcely glorious if after four years of swashbuckling he had: First, caused his European allies to have second thoughts about United States leadership of N.A.T.O. Second, driven the Soviet Union in desperation to seek an accommodation with the very shrewd Chinese. Third, induced Australia to have second thoughts about A.N.Z.U.S. Fourth, had alienated the Third World. These have either happened or look as though they might happen. — Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON. May 2, 1984.
