Seattle group in Chch

A delegation of 35 people from Christchurch’s American sister city of Seattle has arrived in the city for a five-day look at trade and tourist opportunities. The Deputy Mayor of Seattle, Mr Jack Collins, describes the tour as a people-to-people visit rather than a government-to-government trip. The group includes a variety of business people from an aeronautical engineer to a bakery equipment salesman.

Each member of the group has paid his own way to New Zealand and is responsible for his own business contacts.

The group has been in New Zealand for two weeks and has visited Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, and Queenstown. “We had a very interesting discussion with the Minister of Tourism (Mr Talbot), and we believe we have much to offer New Zealand vistors,” Mr Collins said.

“Both countries can learn from each other but one of our greatest barriers is to get rid of quotas and protectionism,” he said.

“Both countries are at fault. Besides trade we could break down barriers in all things. One of the main reasons for the trip is to bring the two cities closer together,” said Mr Collins.

The delegation is returning a visit made by a Christchurch group to Seattle about 18 months ago.
