Chase ends in crash

A car went over a bank on Dyers Pass Road and its driver had to be cut out of it after a high-speed chase in Christchurch early this morning. Several police and Ministry of Transport vehicles were involved in the chase, and at one stage, the pursued vehicle had attempted

to run a police vehicle" off the road, said a police spokesman. The police were told that a car was doing “wheelies” round Cathedral Square at 12.18 a.m. The police then received calls about a car going the wrong way down one-way streets at speeds of about 80

km/h. The car was chased down Colombo Street but efforts to get it to stop failed. The vehicle was chased up Dyers Pass Road, where it ran off the road and over a bank near the Sign of the Takahe. Cutting equipment was needed to free the man.
