Cleaners’ decision referred
PA Wellington The Labour Department is considering a request from Crothalls Cleaning Company to invoke the Commerce Act against cleaners who are on strike.
The company had asked the Minister of Labour, Mr Bolger, to use the act but Mr Bolger said yesterday he had referred the request to the department for its “advice and what acfion it might consider appropriate.”
Cleaners in the private sector want a pay rate of $5.05 an hour, but the company says the six-day strike is designed to break the wage freeze regulations. Mr Bolger said he had asked the department for a “quick comment” on the request.
