Govt endorses snorts centre

Parliamentary reporter The Government has called for active support from sports groups and the general public for the National Sports Training Centre in Christchurch after endorsing the project itself. The endorsement came yesterday from the Undersecretary for Recreation and Sport, Mr Thompson, who said he supported the national fund-raising campaign being launched for the centre. “We recognise, however, that its success rests with the national sporting community and the general public supporting this vital appeal,” he said. Mr Thompson said the New Zealand Lottery Board had already approved in

principle assistance of $1 million. He described the project as “an exciting initiative, deserving the active support of sports groups arid the public at large.” International success required even greater commitment on the part of athletes and more sophisticated facilities for their preparation, he said. The training centre would bring together specialist sports facilities, sports science expertise and residential accommodation in the one centre. Mr Thompson said that athletes preparing for international competition, or needing to meet for specialist training would have “an ideal and a readily accessible venue” for their use.
