Garland ordered off
PA Auckland Manurewa, reduced to 10 players for the last 55 minutes of the game, scored twice in the second half to beat Mt Wellington 2-1 in the Challenge Trophy soccer clash at Gallaher Park last night. The New Zealand defender, Keith Garland, was sent off by the referee, Ross Bennetts, in the 35th minute when he retaliated to a charge from Mt Wellington’s Keith Nelson. The second half was only two and a half minutes old when Paul Gemmell broke deep, crossed to the near post, and Mark Armstrong flashed
in to get his foot to the ball and score from close range. Dave Taylor spearhehaded the Mt Wellington fight back and in the 59th minute he carved through the middle, pushed the ball to a substitute, Mark Donoghue, who broke into the penalty area but was brought down. Brian Turner scored from the resultant penalty. Manurewa battled on and 14 minutes from time it was again rewarded when Michael Groom gathered the ball in midfield, beat his markers, then slipped the ball to Kevin Hagan who angled in a low shot.
