Harbour Board to sell building
The Lyttelton Harbour Board plans to sell its fivestorey building in Christchurch in a move to centralise its administration at Lyttelton. The board’s chairman, Mr G. E. Wright, said that the board had reaffirmed a decision made last year to centralise its administration and staff in one building in Lyttelton for economic and administrative reasons.
The announcement came after an in-committee discussion held at the board’s Lyttelton office yesterday.
The board’s general manager, Mr lan Brokenshire, said that the decision had been made as the result of the board- receiving a “serious offer” for its Christchurch building. The building, on the corner of Madras Street and Oxford Terrace, has been offered for sale for $1,275,000.
, The move involved planning for a new port building in Lyttelton, Mr Brokenshire said, although the
board did not intend to sell its Lyttelton offices in Norwich Quay, he said. Mr Brokenshire said the board had looked at concept plans for the Lyttelton building as well as considering the extension of its present offices. The Lyttelton Harbour Board has worked from offices in Christchurch for more than 100 years. It originally leased offices in
Cathedral Square before moving to the Madras. Street site in 1959.
The board’s operations staff is based at Lyttelton and includes the harbourmaster’s office, traffic department, and associated administration.
General administration, including the manager’s office, chief engineer’s department, and marketing manager are based in Christchurch.
