Auckland poised for golf title

PA Timaru Auckland is set to win the Stylemaster Women’s interprovincial golf title for 1984. With one match remaining Auckland is clear of the other teams by one point, and has a relatively easy game today against NelsonWest Coast-Marlborough, which has won only two of its five matches. Had it not been for a three-putt final green by Jan Scandrett (Otago) yesterday afternoon, Auckland’s lead woould not have been so clear cut. The Otago No. 1 and a New Zealand representative, Scandrett was ahead against Karrin Young in what might have been the

most vital match of the tournament. The two teams were locked at two all with four pairs in and it was up to the top players to decide the outcome. If Auckland had lost, it would have given the defending champion, Bay of Plenty-Thames Valley, a chance of winning today. Young had a bad drive on the last hole, finishing under a small bush. She was forced to play a small recovery chip, and played her third shot to 8m from, the pin. Scandrett was 6m away for two. Young putted up to within 2in and the pressure was on Scandrett to put her putt close. She misread the line,

and left herself with a metre winning chance. The putt slid past the hole and the game and match was squared. Bay of Plenty lost its chance to challenge for the title when it lost 2-3 to the home side, South Canterbury, in the morning round. South Canterbury has won a reputation for causing upsets this year after it beat the highly fancied Waikato team 3-2 on the first day. Wellington also had a chance at the beginning of the day, but it was beaten by Waikato in the afternoon. In the final round tomorrow Otago and Wellington meet, South Canterbury plays Manawatu-Wanganui,

Bay of Plenty plays Taranaki, Canterbury meets Waikato and Hawke’s BayPoverty Bay plays Northland.
