Shivaree retired

PA Hamilton The outstanding Matamata galloper, Shivaree, has been retired after failing to recapture his best form as a nine-year-old this term, the gelding's senior trainer, Dave O’Sullivan, said yesterday.

As a three-year-old, Shivaree really hit his straps, scoring seven wins and four stakes-bearing placings from 14 starts. His wins included the Avondale Championship Stakes and the Duoro Cup at Trentham, and he was a meritorious third behind Silver Wraith and Orchidra in the Easter Handicap. He became one of the most celebrated thoroughbreds on both sides of the Tasman as a four-year-old, winning five times in New Zealand, including the A.R.C. George Adams Handicap and the Dalgety International Stakes, plus two in Sydney, the Tancred Stakes in race and course record time and the A.J.C. Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

The following term, in Melbourne during the spring, he was a courageous runner-up three times, behind Dulcify in the W. S. Cox Plate and L. K. S. Mackinnon Stakes, and Mighty Kingdom in the Caulfield Stakes.

Shivaree recaptured this form as a six-year-old when only raced at home. He produced two stunning performances when taking the Japan-New Zealand Trophy and Easter Handicap at consecutive starts. The Easter of 1981 was his last victory. His career earnings were $326,000. 1
