Minister angers students
PA Wellington The rejection by the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, of an appeal to abolish the University Entrance examination has angered university students. The New Zealand University Students’ Association has said that if Mr Wellington was going to reject a co-ordinated appeal from
educational groups as a “simulated consensus” without offering to discuss the matter, there was little hope for achieving democracy in New Zealand, or for coherent formulation of education policies. The association’s education and welfare vice-presi-dent, Ms Sarah Salmond, said that the educational group had strongly sup-
ported the Post-Primary Teachers’ Association’s plea for an all-parties conference on the U.E. abolition issue. Ms Salmond said the group reached a very real consensus that Sixth Form Certificate should be the only award in the sixth form as it met the needs of disadvantaged groups without affecting academic standards.
