Doctor Whisker
The fantasy world of Margaret Mahy will be brought to children in Christchurch during the May school holidays. Ms Mahy, the writer in residence at the University of Canterbury, has adapted an unpublished story into a play for the university’s Drama Society. “The Wonderful Doctor Whisker” will play to children in public libraries around the city from May 4 to May 8. The play, directed by Stephanie Creed, who has worked with the Riccarton
Players, is a children’s fairy tale. It has all the essential elements for a fairy tale — two “baddies” — Mr Quidd (Andrew Skelton) and Dr Fairy (Sean Hughes), who make a wicked potion to increase the terrible colds and spots which have infected the whole town. The hero, Dr Whisker (Phillip Simpson) cheers everybody up, which forces the villains to go to the local witch (Jill Collins) to find another evil brew. However, they are followed by a little boy,
Jackie Rabbit (Chris Rogers), who tells the witch about Dr Whisker. The good doctor ends up to be a long lost friend of the witch, the villains are chased out of town and everything ends happily ever after. The production will also play to primary schools around Christchurch. The technical side of “The Wonderful Dr Whisker” has been managged by Peter Dowling. Ms Mahy’s daughter, Bridget, has organised the costumes for the show. All admission will be free.
