Forest industry earnings

Sir,—One is continually learning through the media of the current value and future potential of the forest industry. The greatest investment in this area must be by. the taxpayer in the New Zealand Forest Service, yet this organisation cannot even cover the cost of its operations and still requires taxpayers’ support. Over the holiday period two prominent advertisements appeared in the national press: one by private forest interests and the other by the Forest Service. Both indicated great increases in planting areas, but whereas the private sector could show export earnings of hundreds of millions of dollars, the Forest Service could only offer comment about the future of our children. What is happening to all jhe forest produce generated by the taxpayers’ enormous investment in this industry and if forestry is as lucrative as we are led to believe, why does the taxpayers’ investment fail to make any direct return to the national coffers?—Yours, etc., C. OLIVINE. April 27, 1984.
