South African wine
Sir,—Publicity has been given to the importing of South African wines. I wonder how many readers have acquainted themselves with the disturbing aspects of the “tot” system in South Africa. It is a system used by employers to induce alcoholic dependency in the unsophisticated black workers, whereby those guileless unfortunates are paid in wine instead of cash for their labours. As a member of a local wine club I have enjoyed the occasional bottle of South African wine, but now I find its bouqufcf. has the smell of exploita-
tion. Its taste is like the bitterness of suppressed workers, a bitterness shared by those New Zealanders who feel repelled by this degrading trade in human misery. — Yours, etc.,
