Malaysia

Sir,—The article on Malaysia’s new King (“The Press,” April 24) interpreted the situation in Malaysia with prejudice and dismissed the complexities of Malaysia’s history, its constitution, and recent developments with superficial and sensationalist conclusions. I know it has upset the Malaysian community and New Zealanders who know Malaysia well. The report ignores the fact that Malaysia has a constitutional monarchy based on Parliamentary democracy. It contradicts itself in accusing the Prime Minister of being autocratic while admitting he acted through Parliament. Malaysia’s impressive record and continuing achievements would not be possible without sound leadership endorsed by the people. When New Zealanders are so poorly informed on a region of such vital importance to their country, it is disappointing that one of the rare reports on South-East Asia to appear in “The Press” should be an exercise in calumny on a country that enjoys close and friendly relations with New Zealand. — Yours, etc.,

M. M. SATHIAH, Malaysian High Commissioner, Wellington. April 27, 1984.
