Toilet problem unresolved

The shortage of toilets in Hornby which prompted a local dairy owner to install a portable toilet outside his premises will be discussed at a meeting of the Hornby District Community Council on May 21. Mr W. W. Hunt, a Hornby community and Paparua district councillor, said that the council’s request to buy land in the mall car-park to build toilets on had been declined by the Hornby Mall.

The existing public toilets at Denton Park would have a sign-post erected outside them to draw more attention to them, he said, and on May 21 the council would discuss the question of whether to refurbish the toilets, leave them as they are or build new ones. The decision would be taken on the basis of pro-

jected costs, he said. The dairy proprietor who hired a portable toilet two weeks ago has had it removed. Mr Brian Brown had the toilet taken away last Friday because, he said, it was expensive and it had made the council aware of the problem. “It seems they are going to do something, which was the whole point,” he said.

Mr Brown said that a fair number of people had used it, although mostly at night. If nothing happened to ease the problem he could always get it back again, he said.

Mr Brown said he was surprised that other shop owners in Halswell and Upper Riccarton had not raised the subject of toilet shortages in their areas.
