Child welfare expands
PA Wellington The Social Welfare Department programme for children in care is being expanded with the creation of 15 new posts. The children in care planning programme was introduced several years ago to improve the case management of each child coming into the care of the department, said the Minister of
Social Welfare, Mr Young, yesterday. “Objectives for each child are drawn up, in consultation with a variety of people who are intimately involved with the child, including parents, foster parents, social workers, and the child itself. “Since planning for children in care started four years ago, the number of case plans has exceeded
3000 and it has become necessary to appoint additional social workers to cope with this important but heavy workload,” Mr Young said. He said that three more psychologists and two counsellors would be appointed to extend the psychological services already provided by the Social Welfare Department.
