Rise in exports ‘encouraging’
PA Wellington Latest Australian trade statistics point to an encouraging rise in New Zealand exports, said the acting Minister of Overseas Trade, Mr Templeton, yesterday. “Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics for the month of February show a 70 per cent rise in dollar
terms in imports from New Zealand, compared with the same month in 1983,” Mr Templeton said. “This compares very favourably with a rise of only 24 per cent from all sources for the same period. “The A.B.S. figures also indicate that for the eight months to the end of February, imports from New Zealand were up 30 per cent on those for the same period in 1982-83, while imports from all sources rose only 4.6 per cent. “Imports from New Zealand accounted for 3.8 per cent of all Australian imports in February, 1983, totalling 5NZ109.3 million.” Australian exports to New Zealand were also up for February, totalling 5NZ156.8 million, a rise of 28 per cent over the same month the year before, Mr Templeton said.
