Obituary Mr Edward Tyndall

Mr Edward Lawson Tyndall, a former chairman of the Heathcote County Council, died in Christchurch re-

cently after a brief illness. He was aged 81. Mr Tyndall was elected to the Heathcote County Council in 1962. He was county chairman from 1973 until his retirement in 1977. He was also an inaugural member of the Christchurch Town Hall committee. A keen fisherman, tramper and gardener, he was also a former member of the Southland Acclimatisation Society. Mr Tyndall was an active member of the Rhodes Home Trust committee and was a familiar figure around the Rhodes Home until his death. He also did a great deal of work for the Karitane hospitals. Mr Tyndall was born in Blue Spur, near Lawrence,

in Otago. He was educated in Blue Spur and Middlemarch before leaving school to start a career with the Post Office. His work ensured that he travelled and lived extensively throughout New Zealand. He was postmaster in many areas including Rangiora, Tuatapere, Winton, and Te Awamutu. Mr Tyndall retired as chief postmaster at Palmerston North in 1959, when he came to Christchurch. Mr Tyndall was a brother of the late Sir Arthur Tyndall, the former judge of the Arbitration Court, and Miss Clarissa Tyndall, a former headmistress of Christchurch Girls’ High School. Mr Tyndall is survived by his wife and two sons.
