Maree now an American
NZPA-AFP Philadelphia The former world 1500 metre record-holder, Sydney Maree, ends an agonising three year wait when he finally becomes an American citizen in Philadelphia today. The South African-born Maree applied for American citizenship after leaving his
native country to live and work in the United States at the University of Villanova. Previously Maree had been unable to compete internationally because of the international boycott against South Africa’s apartheid policy. Maree married an American and was able to com-
pete for the United States in' the inaugural world athletics championships in Helsinki last year although he had yet to be granted full citizenship. Under International Olympic Committee rules only athletes who have full citizenship can compete at the Olympic games.
