BOX 3439 AUCKLAND SAFETY OFFICER New Zealand Synthetic Fuels Corporation, a joint venture between the New Zealand Government and Mobil, is building a major synthetic petrol plant at Motunui, near New Plymouth. The plant will provide about one third of New Zealand’s petrol requirements and provide employment for some 300 staff. Applications are now invited for the position Safety Officer in the Safety and Security Section of Relations Department. The successful applicant will report to the Superintendent, Safety and Security, and will be responsible for provision of day-to-day monitoring, advice and assistance in accident prevention, fire protection and industrial hygiene in the Motunui plant. The Corporation places significant emphasis on safety awareness and high safety standards. The Safety Officer will therefore be required to continually review safety requirements, to conduct safety inspection programmes and identify and investigate potential safety hazards and accidents. The incumbent will also develop and implement safety training procedures, emergency plans and industrial hygiene programmes. The preparation of reports on safety and environmental matters will form an important aspect of ' the Safety Officer’s role. Applicants should have a good standard of secondary education, preferably to University Entrance level. Ideally, they should be experienced in safety and fire prevention procedures, preferably in a high technology, continuous process industry, such as petrochemicals. A current driving licence is essential and an up-to-date First Aid certificate would be an advantage. Applicants must be prepared to work overtime when required and attend emergency call-outs on a 24-hour basis. Successful applicants must pass the Corporation's medical examination prior to employment. Reasonable relocation expenses and housing assistance will be provided as appropriate.
