Iraq qualifies
NZPA Singapore Iraq had a surprisingly easy 1-0 win over South Korea yesterday to take a place in the Olympic soccer finals later this year. The game — expected to be an exciting and balanced clash given both teams’ earlier performances in finishing runners-up in their respective groups — turned into a whitewash for Korea which was never in the
match. The victory means three Middle Eastern teams, Qatar and Saudi Arabia being the others, qualified as the representatives of Asia-Oceania — something which might cause the Asian Football Confederation to wonder whether it did the right thing in supporting New Zealand’s ousting from competing for Asian zone places in international tournaments.
