Honour for Deans
Canterbury’s recordbreaking rugby full-back, Robbie Deans, has been chosen by the Rugby Almanack of New Zealand as one of its five players of the year. In the 1983 season Deans, aged 23, became the highest scorer in the history of Ranfurly Shield rugby, and bettered his own mark for most points by an individual in a domestic season. He also broke the record for most points for a union in a season. Other marks which fell to him last winter were most points in a shield match (32 against North Otago), most conversions in a domestic season, and most tries by a
full-back in a year. Deans also broke several records in 1982, the season in which the DB Rugby Annual named him as one of its players of the year. He also won the Canterbury “Player of the Year” Award. Ten Christchurch players have been chosen for the South Island Universities rugby squad, to prepare for the match against North on May 10. They are Dale Atkins, Rob Moffat, Merv Aoeke, Craig McDowell, Phil Robson, Phil Dalgleish and Robert Taylor (all University of Canterbury), and Mike McLean, Peter Ryan and Tom Coughlan (Lincoln College).
