Aust, stocks in demand

NZPA Sydney Insufficient stock for sale caused price rises in thin morning trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday but brokers said the gains encouraged more sellers causing prices to come off the top by the close. Brokers expected easier physical metal prices to erode market confidence, but one broker suggested the thin market was manipulated to bolster investment figures for April 30 book closures. In the solid fuel section, Oakbridge at 95c and Coal and Allied 295 were both down sc. Gold stocks were quiet with Central Norseman up 10c at 610 and PekO up 6c at 510, but Emperor was off 5c at 410 in Melbourne. BHP rose 15c to 1135. Its partner in the proposed Jabiru well, Weeks Australia, closed 1c up at 168 after hitting 178 before profit-taking. Weeks Petroleum fell 10c to 510. Santos rose 2c to 672.
