Head for Arts Council

Mr Christopher Brodrick, general manager of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, has been elected chairman of the Christchurch Community Arts Council. He succeeds Mr Maurice Till, a senior lecturer at the University of Canterbury’s School of Music. Mr Till was instrumental in drawing up the council’s new constitution. Mr Brodrick said the Community Arts Council had been inactive for some years because of a lack of funds and a complicated constitution. Last year’s move by the Southern Regional Arts Council to transfer responsibility for grants under $5OO to community arts councils had given the newly-elected committee a sense of purpose, he said.

The council could now be active in the community, and could offer advice and financial assistance to artists and arts graduates. Mr Brodrick said the new constitution had streamlined

the council’s representation. The first priority would be to open communication channels between the community council and those groups it could help.
