Stowaways will be sent home
Six Tongan youths found stowed away on a ship bound for New Zealand will be sent home as soon as possible. ' Crew members of the vessel Tasi found the youths, aged between 15 and 18, two days after the ship had left Nukualofa for Timaru.
The vessel berthed at Timaru on Sunday and immigration officers went on board immediately. Immigration officers accompanied the youths to Auckland yesterday where arrangements were being made to send them back to Tonga. Charges will not be laid against them. The master of the Tasi, Captain Polongo Taualuee, put the boys to work stripping and painting the vessel during the voyage. They told him that they had stowed away so they could go to Auckland and find jobs.
