Meehan dropped
PA Wellington The Palmerston North boxer, Billy Meehan, received an unwelcome wedding present on Wednesday evening when je was told his nomination for the Olympic Games was being dropped. Meehan, aged 23, a featherweight, was married last Sunday and one of his wedding guests was the New Zealand Boxing Council’s chairman, Trevto.' Mitchell, the man who told Meehan he would not be
going to Los Angeles. Mr Mitchell said the council felt Meehan was not fighting well enough to be nominated. But Meehan said it sounded as if the council put names in a hat and he was the unlucky one. The three boxing nominees, ranked in order, are Kevin Barry (light heavyweight). Michael Kenny (heavyweight) and Michael Sykes (light welterweight). + The Olympic team will be named on Monday night.
