Rangers to meet N.Z.
PA Auckland Glasgow Rangers, fourth in the Scottish premier soccer division, will play a New Zealand XI in Auckland on June 9, said the chairman of the New Zealand Football Association, Mr Charlie Dempsey, yesterday. He said that the match at Mt Smart stadium, would be the only one remaining for New Zealand this year against a team from
abroad. “Players have sacrificed a lot of time off work and away from their families over the last six months,” said Mr Dempsey. “Perhaps it is a blessing in disguise we did not qualify for the Olympics (in Singapore). Otherwise they would have had to spend a lot more time away.” In keeping with the association’s policy of the national side not playing touring club teams, Rangers
would meet a New Zealand XI. Mr Dempsey said he hoped that the national coach, Allan Jones, might be able to use players such as Steve Wooddin and Steve Sumner, who were not available for the Singapore tournament. “If we can blood some of the younger players who went to Singapore with the more experienced ones who couldn’t, it will be good for the future of the game.”
