Mobil Silver Plough for Timaru in May
The 1984 Mobil Silver. Plough Final will be held at Seadown, near Timaru, on May 11 and 12. Twenty-two top match ploughmen will compete for the Silver Plough Trophy and the chance to represent
New Zealand at the thirtysecond World Ploughing Contest at Fyn, near Odense, Denmark, on September 20 and 21, 1985. New Zealand’s representatives at each world contest are the winner and runner-up at the Mobil Silver Plough of the year before. As in past years, the winners of the 1983-84 regional events held by each of the 22 ploughing associations are eligible to compete in the 1984 Silver Plough. These are (with the associations represented in brackets): Stewart Allison, Clarkesville (Waimea Plains P.M.A.); lan Miller, Wendon (Tuatapere Y.F.C.); Graham Gifford, Blenheim (Lincoln P.A.); David Brown, Temuka (North Canterbury P.A.); Gordon Carter, Greenpark (Rakaia P.M.A.); Ray McKenzie, Clarendon (Methven P.A.); Bruce Redmond, Methven (Hinds Y.F.C.); Alan Begg, Ashburton (Mil-ford-Clandeboye Y.F.C.); Roger Jordan, Blenheim (Timaru P.M.A.); John Watt, Balclutha (West Otago P.M.A.); Peter Carter, Greenpark (Taieri P.M.A.); Alister Rutherford, Gore (Tokomairiro P.M.A.); Bob Mehrtens, Seadown (South .Otago P.M.A.); Kevin Bush, Feilding (Takapau Ploughing Club); Ross Henson, Waitohi (Manawatu P.M.A.); Campbell Agnew, Havelock North (Reporoa-Rotorua P.A.); Bob Scott, Carterton (Wairarapa P.M.A.); Rex Jessop, Feilding (Waikato P.M.A.); Alan Baker, Waikato (South Auckland P.M.A.); Dick Quinn, Rakaia (East Otago P.M.A.); Robin Bowron, Blenheim (Marlborough P.M.A.); Ivan Maw, Methven (Marlborough Y.F.C.). The 1984 championships are being hosted by the Timaru Ploughing Association, on the property of Mr J. C. Kyle at Seadown. The® will be an interdenominational church service
held in St Mary’s Anglican Church to dedicate the Silver Plough on May 10 at 5.30 p.m. to which the public are invited. The competitions start with stubble ploughing on the Friday, May 11, at 11 a.m. concluding with grassland ploughing on the Saturday, May 12, which begins at 11 a.m. also. An interesting and varied programme has been arranged by the Timaru Association for the general public. This includes dog trials staged by the Levels Sheepdog Club, trade displays, vintage displays, aerial spraying, and a helicopter display. For the children the association has arranged various competitions, including steam truck rides, a lolly scramble, jigger rides, and needle in the haystack. Entries for the dog trials close with A.
