New dam causes disease
NZPA-AFP New Delhi Construction of a huge dam in southern India has raised the alkalinity of subsoil water, causing the spread of a new bone disease, which bends the leg to the shape of a bow, researchers have reportedly found.
Dr S. G. Srikantia, the former director of the National Institute of Nutrition, who led a team of researchers to three affected areas in coastal Andhra Pradesh state, said that he found 600 people crippled for life by the disease. Dr Srikantia told the Press Trust of India that his team had obtained evidence that the crippling bone disease was linked to environmental changes as a result of the construction of the Nagarjuna Sagar dam.
