Govt scrutiny of professional associations
PA Rotorua A detailed study of five main compulsory professional associations — those related to accountants, lawyers, surveyors, pharmacists, and valuers — is being done by the Government. The Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs, Mr Thompson, told the annual meeting of
the Valuers’ Institute at Rotorua that the analysis was part of a study of the consequences of offering freedom of association to unions.
“The Government is also looking at other compulsory associations and other related matters, such as compulsory levying which is common in the agricultural
and horticultural fields,” he said.
Mr Thompson told the conference that the Government felt it was appropriate to look at practices in professions and trade which inhibited competition. Some compulsory professional bodies had run with mechanisms to restrict competition.
