Plan for new railway
NZPA-Reuter Moscow
The Soviet Union will build a new railway into the heart of north-east Siberia to open up the iron and gold-rich region of Yakutia, says the official news agency Tass.
The new 830 km line will link the city of Yakutsk with the southern east-west Baikal-Amur mainline due to be completed this year and greatly ease access to vast regions, of growing importance because of their mineral wealth.
Geologists at the Yakutsk gold mines have said they hoped the new line would bring in more men and equipment to boost the production as prospecting, hampered generally by Siberia’s arctic conditions, grows more difficult as reserves diminish.
