Higgins bows out of snooker
NZPA-Reuter London Alex Higgins produced the greatest shock of his controversial career at the Embassy world snooker championships in Sheffield yesterday. For the volatile Irishman became only the second seed to be knocked out in the first round when he was beaten, 10-9, by the little-
known Neal Foulds, from London, who turned professional only last July. Higgins, twice the world title-holder, trailed, 4-5, overnight and came off second best in the war of nerves after taking the first three frames after the resumption.
The match moved to 8-8, and then 9-9 before the No. 5 seed bowed out to Foulds,
the 1982 British junior champion. Eddie Charlton, of Australia, the No. 6 seed, cruised comfortably into the second round with a 10-4 win over Roy Andrewartha. Charlton, a former coalminer, from Sydney, had to struggle to establish an overnight lead of 6-3 but showed formidable consistency in the second session.
