Talented bearer of famous colours
By
J. J. BOYLE
After Royal Sceptre ran fourth as a two-year-old at Riccarton late last season his Washdyke trainer, Pat Corboy, turned to Mr Peter South and said: ‘‘This is the best horse you have had since Grey Way.” Royal Sceptre might never achieve the stature of Grey Way, but he has been doing famous colours proud in recent starts. His win in the Gimcrack
Handicap at Riccarton yesterday was his third on the trot and his fourth in his last five starts for Mr South, who races the Noble Bijou colt in partnership with Mrs Pat Corboy. Royal Sceptre, which also bears the same brand as Grey Way — DWI over 0 — was second favourite for the second leg of yesterday’s T.A.B. treble.
The Riccarton apprentice, Paul Atkinson, found a trailing run for him early, had
him up challenging for the lead on the home turn, and got enough of a break with him to cope with a late charge from Donizetti much wider on the track. There was half a neck between them, then threequarters of a length to Bo Diddley, which had tried to wrest the lead away from Royal Sceptre early in the run home. Chiasso was close at hand fourth, but the others were beaten off.
