Welcome home present for Matthews
Tane Matthews has wasted no time re-establish-ing himself on the Canterbury racing scene.
His first race ride in his home province for several months produced a win on Bronte Lass in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Kildare Highweight yesterday. Matthews returned to the South Island only on Tuesday after trying his luck in the Waikato during the summer. He found it a battle to
get mounts in the north, but he will not want for opportunities now that he is back with his old boss, Ray Harris, at Tuahiwi. “I didn’t get the number of rides I would have liked up north, and I didn’t land a winner, but I’ve come back here to ride lighter (about 49kg) than I was when I left here,” Matthews said as he was being congratulated on all sides by fellow horsemen after yesterday’s win.
