Deserved soccer win
Cashmere-Wanderers hopped two places up the Hertz Soccer League table with a deserved 1-0 win over Nomads United at Beckenham Park yesterday. That narrow margin does not fully reflect Cashmere’s general dominance in the second half when, playing with a chilly wind at its back, it looked the more dangerous and purposeful side. The only goal came 15 minutes from the end when Steve Bailey was held back by a Nomads defender as he surged into the penalty area. Drew Hendrie scored from the penalty spot. Shamrock completed a successful week-end’s work with a 3-2 win over South Canterbury United in Timaru, to go with its 4-0 win over Western on Saturday. A Joe Mullins penalty and two goals from lan Marshall gave Shamrock a 3-0 lead before Gary Binnie, with another penalty, and Graham Sargent pulled goals back for South Canterbury. Western squandered a 2-0
lead over Christchurch United by conceding two goals in the last 10 minutes at Western Park. Phil Ayers and Rob Courtenay scored for Western, and Jed Ellis got both United’s goals. New Brighton beat Burndale United, 2-0, at Burnside Park, with second half goals from Phil Lawton and Jamie McGregor. HERTZ LEAGUE
