Socred suggests 45-tonne trucks
PA Wellington Raising the gross vehicle weight for trucks to 45 tonnes would increase transport efficiency and save millions of dollars, said Social Credit’s transport spokesman, Mr Neil Morrison.
Mr Morrison said New Zealand’s internal freight costs were amongst the highest in the world and that every effort had to be made to stabilise them. “Transport operators are subjected to far higher capital costs for trucks and
spare parts than all of our trading partners, while at the same time being held to the lowest gross vehicle weight — 39 tonnes — on which to earn a return on their investment,” he said. “Increased road damage would not result from such
a move as the extra payload can easily be accommodated within the present axle loading allowances. “The horsepower and braking capacity of modern trucks can cope with loads far in excess of the present weight restrictions.”
