Vice-Regal exhibition opening
PA Auckland The Governor-General. Sir David Beattie, opened an exhibition by a former room-mate yesterday — the painter, John Holmwood.
Sir David said the opening was a personal pleasure, because in 1941 he and Mr Holmwood shared a room at Trentham barracks, sitting their commission. He described Mr Holmwood as one of the major painters of the 1950 s and 19605, when art and artists were less appreciated than todav.
His Excellency welcomed back Mr Holmwood, who had lived in Britain since 1973, as "Auckland's prodigal son."
Mr Holmwood, who was born in Wellington in 1910, studied and painted in the capital until moving to Auckland in the 19405.
