Support for A.N.Z.U.S.
PA Auckland Closer contact between New Zealand, Australia and the United States under the A.N.Z.U.S. treaty was beneficial to Pacific Island countries, according to the Prime Minister of Western Samoa, Tofilau Eti. Tofilau Eti said during a visit to Auckland that Island nations could not cope with their own defence.
In view of the growth of Soviet forces in the Pacific and increased Russian influence, closer contacts with Australia, New Zealand and the United States under A.N.Z.U.S. was beneficial.
Samoa, he said, regarded the. South Pacific Forum as an'important organisation because of the opportunities
it gave small nations such as Samoa to have a say in world affairs. Small island States could not police their 200-mile zones without the co-opera-tion of other forum members and the support of the A.N.Z.U.S. partners, he said.
