Wilson, Quinn farewelled

PA Wellington Wellington gave a rousing farewell yesterday to two of its favourite rugby players, Stu Wilson and Paul Quinn. Respective captains of a Wilson team and an lan Upston team, the pair played their last games in the match won, 28-20, by Wilson’s team.

Wilson’s Wellington College Old Boys club staged the match for the Al Keown Memorial trophy, and an estimated $lO,OOO was raised to help junior rugby within the club. Studded with All Blacks and three Australian representatives, Wilson’s team was far too good in the lineouts, where Gary Whetton, Andy Haden and Alan Whetton dominated.

Wilson played at first five-eighths, where he played in his first game for the club, and made a few dashing runs. Mostly he was

keen to allow his outsides, Bill Osborne, Bruce Robertson and Brendan Moon, to do most of the running. The Wallaby, David Campese, left the field early in the first half with a recurrence of a leg injury he suffered in Hong Kong at the recent sevens tournament.

Chris Roche, Andy Dalton and the Counties former All Blacks, Rod Ketels and John Spiers, showed that there is no answer to experience which the shadow Wellington team found to its cost. Scorers.—

Stu Wilson’s XV: 28 (Bill Osborne, Gary Cunningham 2, Andy Haden, Brendan Moon tries; Stu Wilson 2, David Campese, Bruce Robertson conversions.) lan Upston’s XV; 20 (Michael Clamp 2, Peter Barlow tries; Evan Hopkin, Murray Blandford penalties; Blandford a conversion.)
