Qatar close to Games position

NZPA-Reuter Singapore Qatar recorded its second successive win in the AsiaOceania group B Olympic soccer qualifying tournament in Singapore on Saturday when they defeated Thailand 1-0.

A sixty-third minute goal from Ibrahim Khalfan Ahmad knocked Thailand out of the Los Angeles Olympics and gave Qatar a golden opportunity to make their Olympic debut. Qatar play the Asian Games champions, Iraq, today and a win will virtually guarantee them a Games place. Thailand will play Malaysia today. Iraq moved closer to the Olympics with a 2-1 win over Japan that lifted them to the top of group B. All the goals came in the first half before 15,000 fans at the Singapore National Stadium.

Iraq threatened a goal riot when the striker, Wahid Munir Yaacob, headed home a right-wing cross by the midfielder, Matik Abidann, after two minutes to open the scoring. However, Japan, out of contention for the Olympic finals, pressed hard for their thirty-fourth minute equaliser which came when Hiromi Hara headed in from Nobutoshi Kaneda’s centre.

Iraq came back to make it 2-1 a minute before the interval, when Adnan Derjal Muttar drove his shot through a five-man Japanese wall from a 30-metre free kick.
