Press Gallery rents
Sir, — The Prime Minister’s decision to charge the Press Gallery for office space is an aggressive red herring to distract its members from looking too closely at important national concerns. So also are the flag-raising suggestion and the strife that has arisen from the legislation on unions. I would be disappointed if any of the media give in to the pressure to pay rent, but I would like to see them follow the advice to concentrate on the important news. They would then ignore the Government by distraction, and investigate things such as the fitness of Cabinet Ministers to remain in office and the distortions in the economy. They also need to counter strength with strength, imposing a news black-out on the Prime Minister if he refuses interviews with lan Fraser or discussions with panels chosen by television. The absence of his comments on other people would be a welcome relief. — Yours, etc.,
RICHARD HARMAN. April 18, 1984.
