Nuclear weapons

Sir,—ln the Waimairi District Council’s debate on declaring the county nuclear weapon-free, only three Labour-orientated councillors argued in favour. The rest followed the Henry Ford principle of producing any argument provided it followed the National Party hierarchy line. Apart from one or two members the National Party is presenting an image of lofty indifference to public interest in its defence and foreign policies. This is despite the party’s president’s statement last year that the n« ear

issue would be a major one at the 1984 elections, or that of Mr Kidd, M.P., who said we had to try something, anything, rather than do nothing but criticise. The will to do something is obviously not there, despite the Ministerial exhortation at the recent Municipal Association’s conference that emphasis must shift from roads, drains, etc., to general community needs. Is the nuclear issue not one? Obviously the problem is too big to be left to politicians. — Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON. April 18, 1984.
