Nelson, Canty favourites

Nelson Old Boys (men) and Canterbury (women) emerged as the early favourites for senior honours in their respective divisions at the Canterbury Basketball Association’s annual four-day South Island tournament which opened at Cowles Stadium and Pioneer Stadium yesterday. Packed with national league players, Nelson had some uneasy moments in the opening game against Butler Auto Spares-Y.M.C.A. (Christchurch) before the height advantage of the Americans, Jacques Tuz and Tom Lesco, and Nick Costley took over. Nelson won 72-44 and had an easier game against Continental CaterersRangiora last evening when winning 94-49. The Canterbury women’s league team was unbeaten in two matches, beating Invercargill 48-33 and then Mairehau, which had earlier upset the Otago league team, 56-34.
